In Needed A Dose Of O.C.

I was missing my weekly dose of little miss Livi, therefore “Charleston” and I headed to Kernersville Friday night to stay with my Sister and Sam and to spend some quality time with my niece! I am such a proud aunt that it is stupid ridiculous; I just love her little face so freaking much! She played, ate, pooped, slept, played, ate, pooped, slept…you know, the usual 5 month old schedule. Life is good.

Olivia is such a good baby. She never cries, sleeps through the night, and smiles CONSTANTLY. The cutest thing is to watch “Charleston” and my brother-in-law Sam interact with her. Seeing Blair as a mother comes as no shock; she is a natural. Throughout life Blair and I babysat A LOT so seeing sister raise her own child just looks normal. But to see guys in their 20s, interacting with a baby, is the most precious thing ever. Sammie and “Charleston” look like pros. It all just melts my heart.

Olivia Claire was excited to eat some peaches!
I just love that little bird mouth!
Livi has gotten to be such a big girl; being able to sit up in her chair for meal time!

Life's Lessons As A Woman

(This one was kind of hard to write. Its against my human nature to admit my weaknesses. I know they are there but bringing them to the public is simply hard. anyone agree? I like to come across as this confident woman but... we can't always be superwoman at every moment in life. We need these lessons to help us grow.)

Over at the blog, Enjoying the Small Things, Kelle Hampton posted today about Dove’s Self Esteem Movement. Simply stated, the movement is to empower women and young girls to be confident in themselves no matter how they were created or what cards they have been dealt throughout life. Kelle then posed her own question to her readers…What do you know now that you wish you would have known at 13?

I can’t say at 13 I needed to know tooooo much, but there is a piece of information that I wish I would have known when I was beginning to date and have serious boyfriends in high school and college.

You control your happiness, no one else. You are not dependent but independent.

It has been something I have struggled with... Ever since my first relationship in college I have let the man of my life at the time control me emotionally, robbing me of MY happiness. He never knew he was doing it and he never did it intentionally, but, I based my happiness on the attention, effort, and commitment he had to me and our relationship. Ultimately it was my lack of confidence in myself thinking that having him in my life, him wanting me, is what made my life happy. If we were ever struggling, arguing and not getting along, I felt as if my world was ending because I based so much of my happiness on him and “us”. What would I do if I lost him? No matter how much he might be pulling me away from the person that I was, I always allowed that silent control. My happiness was based on him. By secretly allowing someone to control my every thought, I lost myself.

Where was my brain? What in the hell was I thinking. My mother and father instilled in me that I am a strong and motivated individual and that the world was an open book ready for me to read every page. For so many years and relationships this loss of MY own happiness was a repeated tragedy. I lost "Blain" and the person that I inspired to be. My happiness was based on him; based on someone else.

It wasn’t until a couple years ago that a quick sharp turn in a relationship made me realize how wrong I had been for allowing this to strangle me. A relationship ended and for the first time in SO long I felt FREE. It was a sense of feeling that I had not had since high school. I was in control; my happiness was mine. I was a girl with an education given to me by my generous parents; I had a successful career; I had friends; I had my health; I had my family. No one could take any of that away from me and all of that was happiness. I determined my next move, not some guy. A relationship was not what was going to drive my happiness; not anymore.

Since this realization I have never felt better in my life. I am confident because I am happy on my own terms. This decision is mine, my happiness is mine to determine and why should I not wake up every day and be happy about all that surrounds me. Even though I still struggle with this at times and loose sight of the big picture, I have to take the time and reel myself back in. Remember what I have learned and where I don't want to go again. It might always be a slight struggle but my relationships since this turning point have grown and I have become an independent woman willing to support the man in my life but remembering to support myself at the same time. My personal happiness leads to a happy relationship, not a happy relationship leading to a happy personal life.

I control my happiness, no one else. I am not dependent but independent.

Carolina

I go through those phases where I have that one single song that just takes a happy day and makes it brighter; on a sad or frustrated day, my frown gets turned upside down.

Lately that song has been Carolina by Eric Church. I have to stop myself at work from belting out the lyrics as it breaks for the first time in to the chorus…and of course every time after that.

The best part was seeing Eric the other weekend in concert and hearing this song LIVE! 10 times even better!

I will also agree with Eric in that I could never imagine calling another state, other than North Carolina home! I love this place from the mountains in Boone and Asheville to the Coast in Wilmington and the Outer Banks. What is there not to love about North Carolina!!

Carolina – by Eric Church

There's a cabin in a valley
My grandpa built on your land
Your mountains are a canvas for the maker's hand

Tonight I'm fishing Elk River
If only in my mind
No I haven't seen her banks in such a long, long time

I carry you in my heart
Your memory comes over me like the dark
And like a phone call from my baby

Saying honey I miss you like crazy
Like the sound of a siren song
Oh Carolina you keep calling me home
Calling me home, calling me home
Calling me home

Sometimes I grow weary from going all the time
I'd love to take a minute
And let you ease my mind

I'd love to see my Mama
And maybe go for a drive
But I gotta play the star in some little town again tonight

But don't get me wrong
I love what I do
It's just another song about missing you

And like a phone call from my baby
Saying honey I miss you like crazy
Like the sound of a siren song
Oh Carolina you keep calling me home
Calling me home, calling me home
Calling me home

Oh, oh, I'm almost home
Like a phone call from my baby
Saying hone I miss you, I miss you like crazy
Just like the sound of a siren song
Oh Carolina, Carolina, Carolina
You keep calling me home

If you have never heard of Eric before, I suggest you try out his Carolina CD. One of my favorites from start to finish!

A New Move On My Own

I was an orange in a juicer.

Emotionally drained.

Every ounce of feelings and soul had been squeezed out of me yesterday.

It wears and tears on my heart to make decisions without a concrete plan; especially a decision that effects someone else.

When I came to Charlotte in 2007, I was coming off a college track record of moving every year. I went from Lee Dorm on NC State’s campus, to a four-bedroom townhouse at University Suites, to the sorority house, to a five-bedroom house on Canterbury Street, and finally into a two bedroom house on Dixie Avenue with Allie. It was a vicious cycle of packing and unpacking; re-arranging and re-adjusting.

But when I got to Charlotte, I settled into an apartment with two friends that I called home for more than two years. For once it was nice to stay put. Last January though, with the push and pull of the economy, my two roommates and I made the decision to move to a cheaper apartment (but nicer) in uptown. We packed, unpacked, re-arranged and re-adjusted.
We were once again settled into a new three bedroom, 1500 sq ft apartment. I was ready to stay put for another (at least) two years. Well several months ago, one of my roommates, Anna, got engaged and informed us she would not be renewing the lease come January.

This news came as no shock and Leann and I thought we would simply find someone to move into Anna’s space. That’s when my head and my heart started going in all directions. I have shared living space and a bathroom since the day I was born. I have lived with roommates for the past 8 years and not for one second would I trade a minute of it but…when was it going to be my turn; become a “grown-up” and get a place of my own? I will have the rest of my life to share a space with a “roommate” (hopefully a husband) so with this pending move ahead of me do I make it solo? Do I get my own space? My own kitchen? My own bedroom? My own living room? My own bathroom?

As these questions were all lying on my heart because getting a place on my own means leaving Leann, I couldn’t ignore them. I also couldn’t ignore one other HUGE fact. Over the past three years, I have fallen in love with Charlotte. I see myself here; possibly raising a family here and establishing some roots here. Therefore, when will it be appropriate for me to stop throwing money at rent and ground myself in the Queen city with a house purchase? Is it smart for me to move into a two bedroom with Leann, sign a year lease, but then run into the possibility of finding my dream home next summer? If I have to break a lease, I force Leann to move out or burn myself having to find someone to sublease for me while I break the bank and purchase my very first home.

Therefore with all of these questions and possibilities, my insides have been eaten alive with emotion. I would never want to hurt Leann because she moved in as a stranger but has become a very close friend; I don’t want to leave her high and dry. But, I am ready to have something that’s “mine”; something that I will live in until I decide to move, not having to move because a roommates engagement or job change.

Well I did it; I made up my mind. I have decided come January, to get a place of my own. A two bedroom apartment or condo somewhere here in Charlotte that will be just for me. I stressed all day about telling Leann my decision but after discussing it with her last night, she was very understanding and supported me in my decision. That’s why I love her. That’s why over the past two years we have become good friends. She is an amazing woman.

So…long story short. For the first time in my 26 year history, I will truly be on my own in my own place. I’m going to have to learn how to budget myself a little better because inevitably it will be more expensive but I am excited for this new chapter in life!!!

Friends, Wine and GOOD NEWS!

Secrets.
I am usually so good with secrets but this one has seriously given my lip muscles a cramp trying to hold it in…

“Charleston” is moving to Charlotte!

I am beside myself …although…I really don’t think it has hit me yet. It probably won’t until Sunday night on the 17th when he ends up staying in Charlotte instead of driving back to Greensboro!

Several weeks ago, “Charleston” had an interview with BASF, and afterwards I had this gut instinct that he landed the job. Something inside of me told me to stay positive and this situation would work itself out. We have talked over the last year about how bad we want to be in the same city and experience “week day life” together and so far, every day, I have prayed so hard this would one day come true.

Well being the intelligent, organized, self-motivated and responsible man that he is, “Charleston” is making this dream a reality. I am so proud of him for accomplishing this professional advancement and can’t wait to be the woman to stand behind him and support him throughout this new adventure. He starts his new job on October 18th and will officially become a Charlotte resident again! (He is from Charlotte so you can only imagine how excited his family is as well!)

Anyways…now that that giant cat is out of the bag…I can relax and move on to the wine festival…

On Saturday we attended the Great Grapes Wine Festival in SouthPark's Symphony Park. The weather was gorgeous; The music was entertaining; The wine was flowing. We walked around for an hour or two and sampled all kinds of North Carolina wines, in the process trying to look “professional” as we sipped, commented and swirled our glass. When we were done “sipping”, Lauren, “Charleston” and I pulled up a big blanket in the shade, bought two bottles of local wine and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon!
The weather was wonderful! Jeans and short sleeves...my favorite!
Miss Lauren Vincent came into town Saturday for the fun festivities! I am so blessed with the most amazing girls in my life!

Diva all around!

Cheers to my baybee!
Not only was Saturday the wine festival but it was also Miss Laura Faust’s birthday! With plans to go out that night, we opted not to stay at the wine festival ALL day so we headed over to Taco Mac to catch the NC State vs. VT game (which I will leave with no comment except for sad times for the Wolfpack) and a bite to eat and then home to rest up for a fun night at Dixie’s Tavern! Happy Birthday Faust!

Overall a fabulous weekend for Faust’s birthday and the news coming out that my hunny hunny is moving to Charlotte!

Kicking It In The Kitchen

I have been busy in the kitchen, trying all kinds of new things. Several weekends ago I had Matt’s parents over for dinner and it was so much fun. For an appetizer, I made Mexican dip with Tostitos, and for dinner we had Tequila Lime Chicken with Pico de Gallo, blue cheese mashed potatoes and green pea salad. The Mexican dip, blue cheese potatoes, and green pea salad were family recipes but I stole the Tequila Lime Chicken and Pico De Gallo from The Pioneer Woman. This was definitely something I would make again!

Tequila Lime Chicken
Ingredients
3 whole Limes, Juiced
5 cloves Garlic, Peeled
1 whole Jalapeno, Sliced
1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
½ cups Cilantro
½ cups Tequila
5 Tablespoons Olive Oil
4 whole Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
1 cup Monterrey Jack Cheese, Grated
Pico De Gallo (recipe below)

Preparation Instructions
Combine lime juice, garlic cloves, sliced jalapeno, salt, cilantro, and tequila in a food processor or blender. Pulse until combined. Turn on the blender/food processor and drizzle in the olive oil until it’s all combined.
Slightly flatten chicken breasts with a mallet or the bottom of a heavy skillet. Place in a plastic bag and pour in marinade. Seal bag and marinate for several hours or (preferably) overnight.
When ready to cook, remove chicken from bag and place on the grill. Cook until completely done. Toward the end of cooking, top chicken breasts with grated Monterrey Jack and allow to melt. (You can also top chicken with cheese and melt under the broiler.)
Serve topped with Pico de Gallo!

Pico De Gallo
Ingredients
5 whole Plum (roma) Tomatoes
½ whole Large (or 1 Small) Onion
3 whole Jalapeno Peppers
Cilantro
Lime Juice
Salt To Taste

Preparation Instructions
Pico de Gallo:Chop jalapenos, tomatoes and onions into a very small dice. (Leave seeds in your jalapenos for a hotter pico). Adjust amount of jalapenos to your preferred temperature. Next, chop up a nice-sized bunch of cilantro. Just remove and discard the long leafless stems before chopping. No need to remove the leaves from the stems completely. Place all of these ingredients together in a bowl and give it a good stir.
Squeeze the juice of half of one lime into the bowl. Add salt to taste and stir again.

On Sunday night my friend Jenna hosted a dinner at her house and all the girls brought a side item while the boys were in charge of grilling the meat! Since we were utilizing the grill I decided to make veggie kabobs. The marinade was so easy and the flavor was wonderful. I love kabobs because they are the most convenient way to get a serving of veggies into your day. I made so many kabobs that I have been adding the leftovers to my salads at lunch this week! Roasted veggies on a salad..YUM!
Veggie Kabobs

Ingredients
2 medium red or white potatoes
1 cup red, yellow and green bell pepper chunks
1 cup red onion chunks
1 cup white button mushrooms
1 cup zucchini chunks
1 cup yellow squash chunks
1 cup cherry tomatoes
Marinade, recipe follows
Wooden skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes

Preparation Instructions
Cook potatoes in salted water until fork tender; let cool and cut into 1-inch chunks. Place potatoes and the vegetables in a shallow dish or container. Pour marinade over vegetables. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.
Preheat an outdoor grill to medium heat.

Marinade:
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup lemon or lime juice
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons maple syrup
2 tablespoons minced garlic
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Whisk together all ingredients in a small bowl. The marinade can be prepared in advance and held covered in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

It Is Going To Be A Lifelong Love

I always knew my eyes had expensive taste. No matter what I am shopping for… jewelry, home decorations, clothes, shoes… I always find myself at the cash register getting a price check and then a huge disappointment stabs me in the heart when I find that my new love is WAY out of my budget.

Well yesterday solidified the fact that my body bleeds expensive taste. Not only are my eyes attracted to the top of the line but my nose is as well. In 2002, when Chanel Chance was introduced to the world, I got addicted. I have never worn a perfume before that smelled so glamorous and seriously lasted ALL day. I wore Chance all through college and friends and co-workers became accustomed to my “scent” and said they always knew when I was around or had arrived at work or a party. It became the “Blain” smell.

Well since 2002, as you can guess, the price of Chance has gone up. I remember paying roughly $50 for my first 3.4 oz bottle of the EAU DE PARFUM SPRAY. Since then I have gone through many bottles, not really paying attention to price, mainly because they have been given to me as gifts. (I am easy to shop for when I stick to the same product for almost 10 years!) Well several months ago I ran out. I started shopping around and the exact same bottle that was $50 ten years ago is now around $100! It’s ludicrous; especially when there are so many other options under $65!

So last night I went to Macy’s with full intentions of buying something different that will become the new “Blain.” I sniffed and smelled around until I gave myself a headache and I came home with…..

...

...

...

more Chanel Chance.

I couldn’t do it. I bit the bullet and bought a bottle for $90. (Ugh, it sucks to even type that. I am slightly ashamed.) But, I had to stay true to my heart (and my nose) even though my pocket was telling me no.

So now it’s PB&J for the rest of the week but at least I will be smelling fabulous and just like myself as I eat it! Sacrifice is well worth it!

The Heart Of The Ocean

After an amazing weekend with a WOLFPACK win, the Eric Church concert in our backyard at the music factory, and a breakfast made for a queen by Matthew, we found ourselves beached on the couch in front of the TV watching Titanic. (Why is it that even when you own the movie you still watch it on TV with all of the commercials?) (Also, male friends, don’t judge Matt. If it were up to him we would have been watching Babe Winkelman Outdoor Secrets but I was in control of the remote!)

Even though I was reciting almost every word, we watched as if we had never seen the movie or even worse, like we had no clue what happened in history! Ha ha ( I actually caught myself still getting nervous as Jack and Rose are stuck at an iron gates on one of the lower decks of the boat and the water is rising up to their chin. Then, as Jack was trying to unlock the gate he drops the gate key under the water! )

Anyway, at one point in the movie Cal places a 56 carat blue diamond necklace (the Heart of The Ocean) on Rose’s neck and tells her, “You know there’s nothing I couldn’t give you, there’s nothing I’d deny you, if you would not deny me.” Matt and I began living our own Titanic scene and I told him that I would love him forever if he gave me a 56 carat diamond. It then became a joke for the rest of the day and these lines were uttered many times:

Matthew: “I won’t deny you anything if you won’t deny me”
Blain: “Fine, give me 56 carats and we will call it a deal”

Well yesterday my "dream came true" and I received this on my phone:

My hunny hunny gave me a 56 “carrot” diamond.

Smartass. Witty little man he is.

Totally Off The "Chain"

Blossom Bauble Necklace
Safekeeping Necklace

Elemental Swag Necklace

Tis' the season to be a fabulous friend and.....donate to the 'Blain NEEDS (wants) One Of These Pretty Pretty Princes Necklaces'!

My obsession with jewelry is out of control (AGAIN) but these are yelling at my neck, "buy me, wear me, love me, have me!" and my heart is answering.

One problem: just not in the budget this month (or for some, never). So right now I will just look, stare, gaze and imagine what a cute outfit I could be wearing Saturday night with one of these as the main ingredient.

I also wanted to share these beauties in case one of my sweet, dear, beautiful, intelligent, caring, kind, dashing friends wants to buy one for themselves and then maybe share with their bestest bud :)

How Are They Related?

The other weekend when I was at home in Kernersville, I was cleaning out the inside of my car at my parents house when Livi kept begging, "Aunt Blain, Aunt Blain...teach me how to drive!" So...Olivia and I had her first driving lesson!
She was a road master...except for the fact she had a hard time keeping her eyes on the road!
** click any picture to view larger**
Matthew and I celebrated our 1 year "dating" anniversary with dinner at Rock Bottom....THEIR FISH TACOS...MY FAVORITE!
Then a little fun together at Dixies Tavern!
Now...what do the two top pictures have in common?
The table that Matt and I are sitting at for dinner at Rock Bottom was the same table that Blair and I sat at last summer as we had dinner and enjoyed an entire bottle of wine before going out with friends. The ironic part was that several days after this fun sister night, Blair called and told me she was pregnant. It then became a joke that Olivia Claire was going to be born with a third eye after all the wine we consumed that night!

Needless to say, as you can see from the first picture, no third eye...just a perfect, beautiful little supermodel that I will forever be proud to call my niece!

Time Goes By So Fast...Especially When You Are Smitten

At this time last year I was sitting in this exact same chair, probably wishing the exact same thing (that this day can’t go by any slower), waiting for the clock to tick 2:30 so I can get the hell out of here.

Except…

Last year at this time, my bags were packed, waiting to be loaded into Laura’s black Acura TL and the anxiety of getting to Raleigh and partying with my girlfriends was killing me! We had made plans to meet up in Raleigh, have some fun downtown Friday night, tailgate our butts off on Saturday and attend the NC State vs. Gardner -Webb football game…ready to re-live the college life! Little did I know at that at that football game, my life would change.

This weekend last year I met “Charleston.”

My girlfriends and I had come out of the football game during halftime to grab another drink when it seemed like the best time in the world to start a game of flip cup; I mean why not? We were on a roll when two gentlemen noticed a fabulous tailgate with a rousing game of flip cup started by girls; impressive! One of the guys (Carter) was a mutual friend of one of my girlfriends…so…the boys stopped and joined in. Somewhere in the middle of the flip cup tournament, the other guy, wearing a College of Charleston T-shirt, really caught my attention. He was cute and tall, intriguing and funny. He was down-to-earth and seemed sweet…I thought to myself, “Maybe I should work my magic on this one :) "

Well needless to say, the “magic” worked.

After that game, Carter and “Charleston” met us at my girlfriend’s house and went out with us that night. “Charleston” became more and more charming as the night went on. He was a gentleman. He knew just when to step in and take my complete attention and he knew exactly when I needed a girlfriend minute. He wasn’t overbearing but somehow let me know that he was always there. At one point, as we were all standing around watching people dance awkwardly on the dance floor, he sat my drink down, grabbed my hand, pulled me out there, twirled me around several times, and we danced as if we were at a beach music fest. When the music got faster, we got faster. When the music got slower, we slowed down. Usually I am not the one to tear up the dance floor but with “Charleston” by my side, I didn’t care how fabulous or dumb I looked pulling out my moves, I just wanted to be there with him. From that point on that night, as cheesy as it sounds, I didn’t care what I was doing as long as it was around him. His outgoing personality was contagious and from that second I was hooked.

“Charleston” returned to my girlfriend’s house with us that night and had a sleepover with me and Laura in the living room. The next morning Laura and I packed our stuff, including “Charleston” who was wearing my pink ADPi T-shirt because his polo from the night before reeked of cigarette smoke. On our way out of town we dropped him off at Carter’s house. When he got out of the car, he waved goodbye and walked inside. As we were pulling out of the drive way Laura asked, “He has your T-shirt, aren’t you going to get it back from him?” Not wanting to get my hopes up over one guy and one night and completely doubting the entire male race in general at this time in life, I just told her it was no big deal; that I have another one just like it at home.

And we left.

As soon as we got on the I-40 back towards Charlotte, I got a text message from “Charleston” and I knew this was something that wasn’t going to end any time soon :)

A year later, that T-shirt is back in my drawer and “Charleston sits closer in my heart then the second he grabbed my hand and pulled me to the dance floor.

I’m totally smitten.

Take Them A Meal

So I might be a little behind the times but I received an email the other day from a friend Sarah who introduced me to one of the coolest websites. This is one of those things that after you see it you pull on your hair and say “Why didn’t I think of that?!”

It’s called Take Them A Meal.com.

It’s genius!

We have all been involved in that group that wants to take a meal to a friend when they have a baby or lost a loved one and it begins with one person scrambling with pad and paper to set up a schedule, make phone calls to everyone, call or email out the details, make sure the schedule is full, make sure two people don’t bring the same meal two nights in a row etc etc.

Well that’s where Take Them A Meal.com comes in handy.

An organizer sets up the friend in the system and adds participants then Take Them A Meal.com handles the rest. Take Them A Meal.com sends out an email to all participants informing them of the event and includes a direct link to the details and schedule. It then allows anyone to go in and sign up to TAKE THEM A MEAL! It allows everyone involved to see the schedule and see what everyone else is bringing so there is no possibility of an overlap! It allows “the friend” to be able to log on at anytime and see when they are receiving a meal and even what they will be enjoying that night for dinner :) It’s so simple. The best part is it allows anyone to forward the email along to other friends in case there was someone that wasn’t on the original list that would be interested in participating! That way you really get “the friend” covered and taken care of during a busy or tough time!

So this morning I sighed up to take Christine and Scott a meal on October 20th through Take Them A Meal.com! Scott and Christine recently had a baby, Vance, and now Christine has started back to work so needless to say things in the Whelchel household have been kind of busy. Sarah set it up so that one person will take the Whelchel’s a meal every Sunday and Wednesday night for the next two months in hopes of helping Christine stay out of the kitchen and more time in the living room with her little family!

I Guess You're Just What I Needed

It had been one of those days; A day where if it were written in a book my dog should have gotten hit by a car right before I came home to see my house broken into. You know, just one of those days.

I was having pity parties for myself left and right.

I had the gut feeling all day that everyone in the world was advancing and I was a sitting duck in a pond that was quickly drying up.

At 6:30pm, in the car, on my way home from my terrible, no good, very bad day…I cried.

My car is my crying post. You know, many people use their car as a free place to sing to the top of their lungs, pick their nose, etc. Well it’s my place to cry as freely as I want and as long as I want. My car has seen the best and worst of days; she knows all my problems.

Now granted (looking back), this day had not been THAT bad but, when I stacked it all up in my head, evaluated my life, and took into consideration all the little things that had gone wrong, plus the amount of pressure and stress on my shoulders, I thought it was so bad that I just had to be the chosen one to have been dealt the worst hand of cards in the game of life.

So I cried. All the way home.

I checked the mail before going up to the apartment and hidden in the pile of junk mail was an envelope with a printed address sticker with my name and no return address.

The envelope was awkward because it felt empty.

As I got upstairs, still looking like a blurry eyed raccoon due to the waterfall of black makeup that had made its way down my face, I opened the envelope.

Inside of the envelope wasn’t a letter; there wasn’t a picture; there wasn’t anything substantial except for a bunch of cut out confetti pieces. As I poured them onto my bed I noticed that they were in the shape of “I”, “U”, and hearts.

It was confetti pieces that said I “heart” YOU.

Instantly tears began to run down my face…again. Why was I crying before? I wasn’t dealt the worst hand of cards. I have the most amazing boyfriend who truly loves me. He loves me enough to sit at his desk and cut sticky notes into letters and hearts and mail them to me. (He later told me he was just practicing with his new box cutter but….I believe different :) ) I always say that it’s the little things that mean the most and this is exactly one of those little things. I have EVERYTHING to be thankful for. I had to tell myself, “No more pity parties young lady, you are blessed.”

What’s weird was that this letter was post stamped on the 2nd and I didn’t receive it until the 8th. Usually an envelope doesn’t take that long to travel from Greensboro to Charlotte. Somewhere in the postal system this letter got held up; like it knew I was going to need it at 6:30 on Wednesday the 8th. Fate? Who knows! But its little things that act as a simple reminder…I couldn’t ask for more right now.

All Choked Up....Everytime

Water was all over my desk, covering all four of my computer monitors, my phone, my keyboard, and my notepad….everything.

I was trying to swallow a pill and choked….projectiling all fluids forward.

Monday I went to the CVS Minute Clinic with a sinus infection. I had just battled a cold and the cold won, taking over some real estate in my sinuses. Dr. Non-Social gave me a prescription of Amoxicillin and sent me on my merry way.

My Amoxicillin paired with Mucinex D has been keeping me alive this week…until today, it almost claimed a life.

I have NEVER been able to swallow pills. As a child (ok, and as a teenager) my grandmother would have to dissolve all forms of medication into a shot of Pepsi. No matter what kind of capsule, she would bust it, break it, and stand on her head to get that sucker to dissolve. I can swallow huge chunks of food; I can swallow my gum on command when a teacher would say spit it out but, when it comes to pills, NOPE, no way. It’s a head game with me; just not going to happen.

Finally by the end of high school I realized how ridiculous I look drinking half a bottle of children’s Tylenol just to get a dose that’s enough for my weight or crushing an Advil in my morning OJ to get through a day of cramps. If I am old enough to have a period with cramps I am old enough to swallow a teeny tiny pill. I started trying REALLY hard, practicing with Smarties and seriously concentrating. After much practice and a stomach full of candy I trained myself to choke down the smallest of a pill.

Well today my amoxicillin pill got the best of me…but it wasn’t my fault. A horse couldn’t swallow these suckers! Why do they have to make them so big! Its 2010, where is the technology to shrink these puppies but with the same dosage of the drug? What’s worse is that I actually NEED this medication, all the way down to the last one. It’s not optional like Tylenol for a headache. So when this pill came flying back out of my throat and into my mouth I had to taste its bitterness (because of course it doesn’t have any kind of coating) and take another sip of water and try again. Let’s just say forth time is a charm :)

It’s all a head game. I swallowed a piece of granola bar this morning bigger then that pill but time and time again, the pill dominates me.

Does anyone else have a little “issue” they can’t seem to get over?

Moving Day In Greensboro

It was the first time in a long time that I stayed up for almost 24 hours straight….23.25 hours to be exact.

“Charleston” moved several weekends ago from one house in Greensboro to an apartment closer to downtown. I drove up to Greensboro after work on Friday to help and I think I got myself into more then I had planned for. We started at 7:30pm packing up boxes, his bead, kitchen stuff and bathroom. At first the plan was to just get his room taken care of so we had somewhere to sleep that night but, after we began, we were on a roll. It was just the two of us and we were tag teaming the entire thing…two machines at work! Because we had mastered the art of moving, I suggested that we just keep going, especially since it was supposed to rain on Saturday. Little did I remember I had gotten up that morning at 4am to go to work!

Well we moved furniture, and boxes, and furniture and boxes.

Now for the reality of the entire moving process:

First, I learned a lot. I learned to not wear flip flops while moving heavy furniture; pedicures will get ruined and toenails will go missing. Feet are already naturally unattractive, try taking a couple toenails off of them…UGH!

I learned to never show your boyfriend that you can lift one heavy box because he will soon start treating you like one of his 6ft guy friends expecting you to lift your end of the pullout sofa over your head.

I learned that it is not OK to cry during moving. Exhaustion cannot set in. No box is too heavy; no staircase it too long and no busted knuckle hurts bad enough to cry about. (I think I heard “Come on Blain, seriously?” more times than I have ever heard “Charleston” even say my name. ha ha)

I learned that sometimes its better just to keep your suggestions to yourself and always let the man take over…even if your idea would have saved 10 minutes and 100lbs of stress. Whether it’s moving or everyday life, a man’s motto is “A woman’s place is in the kitchen” so…if you just have to have your suggestions or opinions somewhere in the moving process, offer to unpack the kitchen and put stuff where it should go. Men are clueless about this stuff; pots and pans never go under the sink!

I learned that by moving at 12pm on a Friday you save all the time and hassle of traffic and other people being in your way.

I learned that if you love someone enough you will pull every muscle, pinch every nerve, and give up the comfort of sitting for the next two weeks to help them at all cause.

“Charleston” and I got the last couch in by 2:30am. Starving, and obviously able to handle the calories after the 7hour workout, we made a frozen pizza and enjoyed it in the living room on the coffee table.

Mission accomplished. The move was complete. We went to bed around 3:15am and woke up the next day to a steady downpour of rain. Our decision to not stop paid off despite my meltdowns, aching body and having to stay up almost 24 hours straight. Job well done.

Check out Charleston’s new apartment! (Please excuse the raw pictures. This was before the boxes had been unpacked and the apartment decorated!)

"Homey G" In The CHARLOTTE House

I ruined the plan.

I turned on her.

I chose NC State over Carolina.

See, we had this arrangement.

We would go to Carolina. (Yes, I now believe I was on some kind of drug when I agreed to this.)

We would be roomies.

We would party together, play together and study together.

Two peas in a pod

Then I did a 180.

I applied at NC State.

Accepted at NC State

Found another roomie; partied with other people; played with other people and studied with other people.

She stuck with the plan…

…and attended Carolina.

But….

She kept me and accepted my decision and stayed my bestest bud.

That’s what you do when you have been friends since preschool.

She lived in Chapel Hill and I lived in Raleigh.

Even though the cities were close, you know how it goes when you get into your own lifestyles and routines.

We made visits to each others on our separate campuses but never actually got to live together or in the same city.

Then graduation came.

Our plans derailed us our separate ways again.

She moved to DC and I moved to Charlotte.

But...

We stayed best buds because that’s what you do when you have been friends since preschool.

Weeeelllllll

It’s been 8 years since we first decided to part ways and live in separate cites but...

That’s all coming to an end.

LAUREN IS MOVING TO CHARLOTTE!!!!!!!!!

I have never been so excited.

My best bud is back in the South and more importantly close to me!

She will be here in OCTOBER!

Yes, I know, that’s less than a month!

I’m done. No more words can describe how happy I am right now.

I love my "homey g funk" , A.K.A. Lauren Musiol, always and forever.

Come October we will both be Charlotteans!

A little piece of home will soon be close and it’s stored in my best friend!

Olay....Olay, Olay, Olay

After nine years of loyalty, I am retiring the luffa. I have had many different luffas and got addicted to the concept because I thought it helped exfoliate etc. etc. etc…. The problem with the luffa is that it requires the use of body wash. In the past couple years, GOOD body wash has become expensive and after trying many different brands ,or settling for whatever was on sale, I always felt like my skin was still very dry and not necessarily 100% clean. (Yes, it’s gross...nine years to realize this!)

Last week I ran out of body wash so on the way home from work I stopped into CVS to buy more. I don’t know what sparked the purchase, maybe the screaming toddler blocking the aisle crying for some nasty gummy things, but there was a display of Olay Bar Soap in the front so I scooped up a package and checked out. I came home with 4 bars of the Olay Ultra Moisture Bars and stuck one in the shower with a wash rag.

Over the past week I have used this soap every morning in the shower and my skin, without a shadow of a doubt, has never been so soft and honestly glowing. I don’t even have to use lotion anymore! This stuff lathers like butter and smells like clean laundry. “Charleston” even made a comment this weekend about how soft my skin felt compared to what it used to…. (And yes, he made the comment just like in the Olay commercials where we were rolling around in expensive, thick, white sheets that look like clouds and white curtains hanging over open windows and blowing in the summer breeze …ha ha ha, juuuuuuust kidding)

Anyway, I will never go back to body wash. That is a bold statement but I am sticking to it. I will be an Olay bar soap fan until the day I die. It’s that serious.

Olay, do you need a new spokesperson by any chance?!!! Move over Jessica Beil, here I come!

I'm a 20-Something....

My dad said it one night while sitting at dinner talking about one of his high school friends, “Well she started her family late. She didn’t have her first kid until she was 25.” My ears perked up because sitting there at age 26, single and living a life of my own, marriageless and kidless, I wanted to see if there were any comments to follow.

I’m from a small town and a lot of the time I feel that this is the mindset that surrounds it. You go off to college, meet your husband material, graduate college, get a job, get married, have children and BOOM, from age 18 – 25 you complete these steps and your life is set. You are dependent on others and others are dependent on you and from here on out you are in, what I call, the “maintenance” stage for the next 100 years. Maintain your marriage, maintain you income, maintain your family and your life is settled. Buy a house, save in your 401K, buy the SUV and take that normal family beach trip every year for vacation. My parents followed this pattern and they are still 100% happy and I personally think they got a good product out of it :) and now my sister is following the same type of pattern and so far her life is wonderful as well but, I have never been so sure that this type of pattern was for me.

I have NEVER felt like this entire philosophy on how to create your life was wrong and for many people it definitly works. Something in me has always just whispered in my ear that I needed to venture out (even if it was only to Charlotte and living in uptown moving around every year). Since the beginning of college and going to Raleigh where I knew very few people, I have felt like the world is truly my oyster; a blank slate. Opportunities are endless and I am the only person I have to worry about – ME and only ME. Hauling ass through the life processes mentioned above, in my book, doesn’t require a timeline like the stigma associated with earlier generations. My first kid at 33 instead of 25 doesn’t scare me. Getting a job and going back to get a graduate degree by myself before settling down with a family in your 20's isn't a bad idea in my mind, especially since I was being picky and didn't want to settle down with just ANY guy for the rest of my life. Again, I am only 20, I should be picky about the guys I choose. I am young; I have options; I want to take advantage of them. Exploring my options is part of my process and not always reverting back to the known is my preference. It keeps life interesting.

Its ironic that I have been thinking a lot about this topic lately because just the other morning I found this article online in the New York Times:

What Is It About 20-Somethings

It’s long but well worth the read. It answers many questions about the 20-somethings of my generation. This article tries to explain why so many young people in my generation are refusing to grow up, get married, build families etc. as some of our parents would call it.

Associated with this article was an entry response by 27 year old Jessie Rosen. MANY things in Jessie’s response hit home with my opinions and thoughts. I couldn’t have said it better myself….

Dear NY Times, here’s Why I Haven’t ‘Grown Up.’ Love a 20-Something. By Jessie Rosen

Yesterday I received the same message via email, text, tweet and wall post no fewer than a dozen times:

"I'm sure you've already seen this, but ..."

The "this" was Robin Marantz Henig's hefty New York Times article about
the state of today's 20-somethings -- an extensive assessment of the way my generation is choosing to spend our transition into adulthood, what our choices mean, and whether they're good or bad.

The barrage of messages came to me because I write a blog called
20-Nothings, started at age 24 after the hundredth time I heard the term "quarter-life crisis."

It also came because today -- at 27 -- I'm literally packing up my childhood bedroom where I returned in May after five years in Manhattan in prep for a cross-country pursuit of my passions.

According to the article, mine is the path of today's 20-something: a meandering line directed by soul-searching -- as opposed to 401(k) saving -- and a fierce belief that 35 is the new 25.

"Seen it?" became my copy-paste response, "I
am it."

For those who haven't read the article (though I recommend you do), the central question is this: Why are so many people in their 20s taking so long to grow up? (
Click here to read Lemondrop's summary.)

New York Times, I have your answer.

It's a question based on the very-well-documented sociological differences between my peers and all those who came before us. Unlike our parents who hit the job-marriage-kids goals at a traditional pace, "[Today] the 20s are a black box -- and there is a lot of churning going on in there," reports the Times.

That churning equals "identity exploration, instability, self-focus, feeling in-between," the opposite of what was/is traditional adulthood (choosing a path, settling down, and creating a stable life for you-plus-family).

As a person who took from graduation to her five-year college reunion to even choose a path, I can attest to the churning. I have churned, damn near professionally.

I have also talked to dozens and dozens of 20-somethings over my years writing the blog about what it feels like inside that "black box." While it is a stretch to say the experience is universal (some people do not have the means to not know what they're doing at 25, but that's a whole other article), many of us do feel less focused and less certain. We are more driven by our personal interests than family-oriented ones.

And our goal is to get to the right place, not to get there at the "right time." It's not that we don't know what it means to be an adult and how we're supposed to do it -- it's that we
do.

We are painfully aware that decisions in our 20s lay the foundation for all of adult life. We know exactly how old our parents were when they had us, and exactly what they sacrificed as a result. We know that time is precious, age isn't really just a number, and having kids changes everything.

So, we can absolutely see the forest through the trees. We just figure it's best to deliberately navigate through those trees so we arrive at the forest in one (better) piece. And -- this may just be the crux of it -- we don't see why we should rush. We were raised not to.

Case in point: When I said to my parents, "I'd like to move home to save money to pursue my creative passions in Los Angeles," they said, "Good for you." (To be clear about my personal sitch: they did not also say, "And here's $10K to get you there!") Every single person I've told since then has reacted with some version of "Now's the time" or "I wish I'd done that when I was your age."

I think there is a difference between wandering and floundering, between taking a longer time to grow up and choosing to stay a "child." The former was me living in a closet-size Manhattan apartment, working at a job I was sure wasn't quite right, and eating Ramen noodles 'till I figured out what was. I took the traditional steps toward traditional adult life (financial independence, career stability), I just took (am still taking) them slower and more deliberately. And I made that path -- figuring out what was best for me both life- and career-wise -- my primary task.

The latter would have been me living in my parents' basement crying to "My So-called Life" on Hulu and meeting the "What are you doing with your life?" question with a "Get off my back!" That's stalling. I was, I don't know, crawling?

But does that make me less mature and less adult? Or does it make me more?

Where I get confused around this plight-of-the-20-something issue is when it's suggested by the generations above us that our crawling or churning is immature or foolish, that one day -- sometime after we cross over the 3-0 threshold, apparently -- we're all going to wake up and realize we should have buckled down, gotten married and quit the charade because the real joy/purpose in life is to "be an adult." That slow and steady actually loses the race.

So, my question as I literally spend my grown-up savings account to pursue my childhood dream is, What is so much better about becoming an adult faster?

What am I gaining by taking my time versus what I'm losing by just getting to it already? With every year I wait to be ready to get married, am I letting all the people there are to marry pass me by? Will I be a better, more mature mother at 35 or would I have been just as adept and instinctual at 25? If I live at home with my parents for one more year while I save up to be a full-time writer, will that leave an eternal mark of lame on my life résumé? Does being an adult mean having the maturity to know you're not ready for adult things, or having the maturity to dive in and just figure it out? Won't I be a better, happier, healthier adult if I take my time getting there?

If someone could please write the article that answers those questions, we'll kindly decide at what speed we'd like to "grow up."

But for better or worse, we were raised to ask all those questions. And in the absence of answers, we've grown comfortable and confident handling them ourselves.

So, as one 20-nothing who has embodied the "It's about the journey" approach, I'd like to say that I am grown up. I am an adult. I just don't look or act or live quite like the generations prior, and frankly I find that thrilling.

Vacation All I Ever Wanted

This past weekend “Charleston” and I tore up the road to OHIO on our “Vacation, all I ever wanted” trip to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. I had the time of my life with my hunny hunny.

We planned this trip in order to get away just the two of us. No schedule, no solid plan…just hop in the car and drive to some place fun.

Mission Accomplished.

If it shows you how unorganized this trip was, let me give you the perfect example:

I booked our hotel several months ago; made a deposit and never thought about it again. I SWEAR I booked the Breakers Express. We show up in Sandusky, OH Thursday night at 9pm at the Breakers Express and….. we are nowhere in their booking system. Come to find out I actually booked us at Hotel Breakers; totally different hotel! Whoops.

Long story short there were pluses and minuses to this MINOR mistake. On a positive note, at Hotel Breakers, we were now staying inside the park so we didn’t have to worry about driving to Cedar Point every morning, battling traffic and lines. We could now come and go from the roller coasters whenever we wanted and walk back and forth to our room. On a negative note, the room was DEFINITLY not luxury accommodations like the Breakers Express would have been. Hotel Breakers is over 100 years old and it showed. Window air conditioning units and bathrooms that remind me of what we had at Camp Tekoa. At least it gave us a good laugh every time we opened the door.

Overall Cedar Point was a perfect mini vacation spot. “Charleston” and I rode roller coasters all day Friday. The lines were surprisingly short so we were able to ride EVERYTHING. Several times “Charleston” had to remind me to slow down. I would step off one coaster and start talking and sprinting towards the next one. I couldn’t help it; I just get so excited about these types of things. Several times “Charleston” literally had to grab my hand and slow me down like a five year old running away from their parents! There was no stopping me! On Saturday we had a small battle with the weather but made the best of the day by riding several of our favorite rollercoaster’s and spending some time by the pool and lake.

Overall it was an excellent vacation with plenty of Blain and “Charleston” time. This trip made me fall more in love with him every day. It is icing on the cake that he loves this type of vacation as much as I do; laid back time, no makeup days, playing in the rain, riding thrill rides and staying in less than par hotels….what more could we have asked for!

I leave you with several pictures of our hotel. I did take my camera on this trip but due to the nature of the activities I did not take many pictures. It was just a little too risky to pull out the camera while riding a roller coaster that went 0 to 120 in 4 seconds! But…the ones I did snap I will share with you later in the week!
