A Little Photo Dump of the best summer!

This time two years ago was probably one of the best summers I have ever had. I had just moved to Charlotte in July but still went back and forth between Charlotte and Raleigh hanging out with friends!
"Back in the summer of '07..oh it was the best time of my life!"

(click on any photo to see it larger)
We spent way to much time on the lake!

This was a normal look at our apartment on Thursday nights... Kenyon and Charles kept us entertained!

Best "Blind" roommate I could ever find!
A little stress relief from the workday..
My Thunda also moved to Charlotte that summer!

We got lucky with the best neighbors in Eastover Ridge!
We all had just started working so the poor people had to put as many people in a cab as possible!
A night out on the CLT town!
After moving to Charlotte, some how I never could get Anna or Charles out of my bed on a AA5 night out!
Raleigh was a hard place to move away from :(

One of our last nights out together in Raleigh before we all parted ways for different cities :(
It was exciting to move to Charlotte, but sad to leave everyone in Raleigh
A night out with my new Roomies!
Move in Day to Eastover Ridge 3306-336! July 2007 It was not a normal night out unless we ended up over at Alan's after the bar playing Rock Band
Every Saturday was spent on the lake at Charles'

Michael and Lori even joined us this year at Beach Music Fest in Stuart, VA!

Any Friends Interested?

While I was working at GE Aircraft during college, one of my fellow co-workers was a professional skydiver and he worked part time for Carolina Sky Sports in Louisburg, NC videotaping guest jumps.
Skydiving was something I had wanted to do for a long time s, for Christmas that year I convinced my college boyfriend to jump with me. We decided that this would be our present to each other instead of spending hours at the mall shopping for just the right thing. (Can’t you feel the love; we wanted to throw each other out of a plane!)

So Slade and I jumped one afternoon (of course strapped to an instructor) and it was amazing! The best part was my co-worker agreed to jump with me and video the entire thing for free! So as I was doing a little cleaning last night I found the DVD and it made me ready to go again! (I will see if I can post the video tomorrow, it’s pretty cute!)

I am now searching for any friends that maybe want to set a date in September or October to go back with me!!!! Let me know if you are interested! You won’t regret it!!! (We also don’t have to go back to Louisburg, NC; anywhere in the southeast will work for me.)

Patience...Gotta Have It

Patience. I have to make it my new practice. Over the past two weeks I have spent too much time focused only on the future and not on today or tomorrow.

I paid my tuition bill on Sunday and found myself lying in bed that night, hoping for this “phase” of life to hurry by as fast as possible so sooner than later I can wake up every morning and adore the career I have ultimately chosen. Patience.

Sunday night, Dustin and I grabbed dinner together at Sundries and our main topic of conversation was the house that he just bought. We discussed furniture, wall colors, blinds, etc. (In my head I know what I want his house to look like!) It was so nice outside that after dinner we decided to go for a little ride over to the new house for me to investigate! It is simply precious and I am so happy and proud for Dustin because what a major accomplishment - he has purchased a house on his own! As we were headed back to Eastover, I started to get a small envious feeling. I wish I could buy a house right now and somewhat “ground” myself in one location. But what if I am not meant to live in Charlotte for the next 20 years in a house I have purchased? What would I do with it then? Would that be a huge financial mistake? What if I meet someone that doesn’t live in Charlotte or what if I take a job outside of Charlotte in another school district? That night in bed, I started praying so hard that all these questions would be answered sooner than later. I felt like I was ultimately praying this part of my life away. Patience

I have been single now for awhile and I found myself yesterday wishing away this time of “waiting” to meet "him" in hopes I can catch up to the rest of my friends who seem like they are taking a joy ride on the “life” train as all the pieces fall into place for them (every single girl out there would be lying if they said this thought has not crossed their mind once!) Patience.

I have to stop. I have to have patience. I have to realize that all these factors are out of my control. This is what God has planned for me and only he knows the reason why before I can see it. . There is a reason that the activities that are occurring in everyone else’s lives, that I long for to happen in mine, have not come alive yet. I have to have patience. I have never been a patient person and this is going to be one of the most difficult things I will do this year. I need to learn to live each day as it is in front of me instead of wishing away the time until I can see things a little more complete and grounded. Patience. I can’t play this time in life as a waiting game. I have to take what is going on now, run with it, and hopefully everything else will fall into place! Patience. I have to learn patience.

Rock Star, Porn Star, or Killer ???

So I get picked on at work since I am the youngest in the crowd. Everyone places bets on whether I will know an event, a band, any famous person etc. So when I walked in the door this morning, I was asked by one of the traders "Who is Charles Manson?" Not really giving a rats butt or wanting to think twice at 5am, I said "A singer." (I really had no clue who he is!) My answer was followed with an "awww poor Blain." Well I will let you know that Charles Manson was a killer, not a lead singer of a famous band!
So...I continued to get joked on all day and when I got back from lunch I had a test awaiting me on my desk. The test was entitled: Rock Star, Porn Star, or Killer??? The instructions were to go through and circle whether I thought the person listed was a rock star, porn star, or killer.
As you know me, I am always up for the challenge and HATE to be defeated so I took the test. Come to find out, I am not as sheltered as most people think I am! I got 13 out of 15 of the people right! Yeah, go me!

How well do you think you could do?! Try the test below! Circle one!
(PS - check out two names on the list. As soon as I saw them I said: "Well Ted Bundy was on Married With Children and John Holmes was a man at my church that sang in the choir!" and yes, that got my co-workers at me again!)

Rock Star, Porn Star, or Killer ???

Lee Harvy Oswald -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Kurt Cobain -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Freddie Mercury -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Jenna Jameson -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
John Allan Muhammed -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Marilyn Chambers -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Bon Scott -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Chrissie Hynes -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Lou Gramm -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Jeffrey Dahmer -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Ron Jeremy -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Steve Perry -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
John Holmes -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Ted Bundy -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
Ted Kaczynski -- Rock Star, Porn Star, Killer
You always have to add a little humor to the work day!

Dolla Dolla Bill Ya'll: Want more $$$$ ?

So I read this article today and actually enjoyed it. Some useful info so I decided to summarize and share!

ENJOY!

The secret’s out: We’re in a recession! No matter how stable your financial situation, we are all looking for ways to find extra money.
A few bucks here or there may not seem like much, but if you make a conscious effort, the dollars can add up quickly.
Here are a few ideas that will get you started without forcing any huge life adjustments.

Negotiate a Lower Interest Rate
If you keep yourself out of debt and pay your bills on time, you are a credit card company’s dream!
They do not want to lose you, so that means you have the power. Give them a call to negotiate a lower interest rate on your credit card and pocket the savings. You may run into some resistance at the start of the conversation, but if you remind them how reliable a customer you have been and that you have no problem walking away, you should get what you want.

Join Netflix
If you regularly rent movies from the video store or go to the theater, joining Netflix could save you a hefty sum. Choose from over 100,000 movies, and they’ll be delivered right to your door within a day or two, along with a prepaid envelope to send them back. You can keep each movie as long as you want.
You’ll see a bunch more flicks, and it’s a lot cheaper than renting one at a time from the store or buying those incredibly expensive theater tickets (and getting tempted to buy that overpriced popcorn and candy!). A painless and fun way to find extra money!

Cut the Cable
Having the premium movie channels may be another way to stay out of the video store and the theater, but are you really getting your money’s worth?
Go through the premium channels you subscribe to and make a list of the ones you never watch. Call your cable company and negotiate for a deal so you are only paying for what you use, which should make your monthly bill a little less hefty.

Bring the Party Home
So many of us meet at a restaurant or bar when we want to spend time with our friends, but why not get together at your home?
Get a couple bottles of wine and a few hors d’oeuvres or make a nice meal. A game of Pictionary, as corny as it may sound, is always a good time, and it’s a whole lot cheaper than going out. If your friends like the idea, convince them to take turns playing host.
Spending quality time with friends while saving big bucks? Sounds like a perfect night to us!

Use Your Own ATM
We’ve all been there. You’re out and realize you don’t have any cash on you, and the most convenient ATM is not your bank’s. The two or three dollar charge for using the machine is steep, but not that big a deal, right? WRONG!
These fees may seem small at the time, but they can quickly add up to hundreds of dollars. Take the time to do a little preplanning before you leave the house, and use your own bank’s ATM. The extra money you’ll save can go a long way!

Quit While You're Ahead
Looking for extra money? Sell your lousy investments. Chances are, with the way the stock market is going, you have a few stocks in your portfolio that you wish weren’t there. It’s tempting to ride things out and hope they’ll turn around, but at least consider whether you should sell these investments.
Even if you don’t make a ton of money, it’s better than losing even more further down the line. Plus, there may be a tax benefit to taking those losses.
Of course, don’t make these decisions on a whim. Consult your financial advisor to discuss whether it’s time to dump some of that dead weight.

Cash In Your Savings Bonds
Remember that savings bond Grandma gave you all those years ago? Go find it and cash it in! It’s free money just waiting to go into your bank account. If you’ve been hanging on to it for more than 30 years, it’s not earning one red nickel, and even if it still has some appreciation left, it might be wise to use it in a pinch. Another quick way to find extra money!

Review Your Insurance Policies
Most of us are pretty thorough when we are choosing an insurance policy, but when it comes to renewing it or paying the monthly premium, we tend to stick with what we have and just pay the bill.
But your insurance is a huge expense and often a place where you can find some extra money. Sit down with your insurance policies and figure out if you are paying for insurance coverage you don’t need. Chances are your priorities and needs may have changed since you originally bought the policy, and making a few adjustments could save you major money every month.

Sell Your Gift Cards
Gift cards can be terrific presents to receive, but only if you want to buy something from that particular store! How many times have you been given a certificate to a store where you don’t shop or that’s nowhere close to your home?
Don’t let that card take up space in your wallet — sell it! You can turn those gift cards into cash by selling them on e-Bay, plus it keeps you out of the stores and away from tempting, unnecessary buys!

Cut Up Some Credit Cards
If you have any credit cards that make you pay a fee, you can find extra money right now by getting rid of them! There are plenty of credit card options that give you great benefits with no annual fee.
Some annual fees may seem worth it if the benefits are something special, but most times paying an annual fee is just silly! It’s an expense you can eliminate with a single phone call today.

Read 'Em and Sell 'Em
Instead of using the books you have already read for decoration around the house, go to cash4books.net and make a few dollars. All you have to do is type the book’s information into the web site to find out how much you can make. Maybe some of those classics are worth hanging on to, but if you’re like us, books you’ve already read just sit around and collect dust.
It’s a no-brainer — sell ‘em!

Hey, Can't A Girl Dream?!

I don’t have a style. I wear clothes usually bought from the mall at either Express, department stores, or, at work I really know how to rock-out some Anne Taylor Loft! Look at me and its pretty simple. I can easily blend in with majority of the crowd on the street and on a regular night probably have the same dress that the other boring girl across the bar is wearing. I might try a new trend here and there, but it’s usually months after it came out because I wait for that “big belt”, “skinny jeans” or “headband” to go on sale. By no means am I a trend setter.

I have come to find out that I envy the artsy type. The way SOME of these peeps throw together the most random shirt, jeans and jewels makes me so jealous. They wear funky hats, headbands and sometimes feathers on top of their stripped tussled hair. It all makes me envious. I know I could never pull off this style in the office (which hinders most of my creativity in life anyways) and sometimes I feel that if you were going to pull off this look you need to be a perfect proportioned smaller girl, which of those I am not.

The artsy talent that these individuals have also makes me extremely jealous. Majority of them make a living doing EXACTLY what they have always wanted to do! I have run across a blog by a girl who is probably the epitamey of what I would want to be if I came back in a second life. She is a freelance graphic designer, photographer and fine artist…. and… on top of it, absolutely amazing at all three! She’s good at her work AND she looks the part; life’s not fair.

If given a second chance at being born again (and it probably would take different parents – sorry mom and dad!), as crazy as it sounds, I would NOT want to be a supermodel, a movie star or a pro sports player…I honestly would be an artsy photographer with a talent for design!

Below is a wedding invitation designed by the girl I was describing above and hold me too it, when the day comes to pick out my wedding invitation, it will be a carbon copy of this one! Also below are several pics of the types of clothing and accessories I would want to pull off every day!
Hey, can’t a girl dream?!

If I could do It again you know I'd do it the same

Tomorrow at 11:30am I am south bound with Luck to the small town of Atlanta! The Rascal Flatts and Darius Rucker concert with friends is awaiting us tomorrow night! I have recently been told that I can never sit still on the weekend – well, it may be true, but when else in my life will I get to wake up on a Wednesday and decide that I want to go to Atlanta for the weekend with Friends at the last minute! The only thing I have holding me back is myself so tomorrow I will have the wind in my hair southbound on 85!

Thanks to our “group organizer” Kenyon, those of us participating in the concert activities received the following email today! Not sure if everyone will find this comical but if you know Kenyon – it’s only a precursor to how the rest of the weekend looks! Ridiculously fabulous!

EMAIL

Subject: Die Hard Hootie Fans
For those who jump head first into awesomeness and others who are stupidly
sit on the fence (and Jillian because I would never leave her out),

The "Guys in Jorts" summer tour will once again be crashing an Atlanta
summer concert event. If you haven't seen our show yet you can be sure to
expect lots of man thighs and situational flirting. If flirting isn't
something you're interested in I suggest taking it easy on the sour apple
Smirnoff Ice. Before I get started with some logistics I'd like to thank
Darius Rucker (formerly Hootie of Hootie & the Blowfish for those that are
musically challenged) and Rascal Flatts for dropping this little gem into
our laps. I'd also like to give props to Clayton for forwarding his
Ticketmaster pre-sale alert to me back in March (you can never be too
prepared for a July concert). Little did he know I was forwarding my
pre-sale alert to him at the exact same time, which is so cool that our
emails high fived as they crossed each other in cyberspace.

I'll keep this short so I don't dilute the logistics with one
liners.......which I'm sure Clayton will have coming in his reply, so here
we go.

Concert starts promptly at 8:00 PM. That means yours truly wants to be
into the venue and well established on the lawn in between at least 2
groups of highschoolers by 7:45 at the latest.

Meetup: We're planning on meeting up at Matt's (plenty or road parking)
and leaving his place no later than 4:00pm. His address is 370 Alberta
Terrace NE, Atlanta, GA 30305. Yes, a 4:00 pm leave time may be aggressive
to some people, but think about it this way, Josh Champion, being the
animal that he is, suggested we head down to the venue to tailgate at 2:30.
We're going to hit traffic no matter what, so leaving by 4 will still give
us plenty of time if it takes us an hour to get down there or if any other
unknown variables come into play. If 2 hours of tailgating scares anyone
(ie. Clayton) and they think they'll drink too much before the concert then
I recommend you seek some professional help on how to exercise some
personal self control.

Transportation: I'll be taking the murder wagon down to the venue, fits 6
comfortably and 7 if you want to get to know each other better. Let me know
if you're meeting us at Matt's before we head down so we can plan how many
other cars we'll need, my thought is at least 1. We'll have a buddy system
to go pick up the cars in the morning as I plan on taking a cab back unless
someone volunteers to drive my car home.

Food: Since we're leaving at 4:00, and nobody should be subjected to
paying $15 dollars for a hot dog in the venue, I suggest we all maybe bring
something to eat to the tailgate. My personal choice is going to be a
hearty sub from my local Publix. Preston said something about bringing his
dip. Not sure if that was intended to be sexual or if he was actually
bringing food. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Beverage: Adult beverages are not frowned upon in the Lakewood parking
lots. I have a small cooler that will hold about a case and a bag of ice.
I suggest BYO liquor/beer/wine/squirt gun shooters and have a plan for
keeping them cold. I suggest picking a buddy and sharing a cooler, or
share with multiple friends if you have a big cooler. With 6 people in my
car we're not going to have a lot of room for coolers, but if we split off
into a couple cars we'll have a lot more room for party favors.

Joe Camel vs. Malibu Barbie

If you told me to smoke, I would say “No” – without question. Sure, cigarettes paid for my education, food, and a roof over my head (thank you Joe Camel) but I know the potential risks and the zero benefits that come from smoking. It’s a sink hole for $4 a pack which could ultimately be the price of a meal! I have had family members and others I know pass way from the risks due to smoking. I have learned from their experiences; there is nothing positive associated with the hobby (except for giving my dad a salary! – This could be a controversial topic but...lets stay focused...)

Anyway, today in the Charlotte Observer is an article on Tanning Beds. (Oh yes, here we go...) In summary, this article explains how research has proven that tanning beds are a type of carcinogenic due to their radiation. An analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. London International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas.

So, for most of us this is not “new” news. Tanning beds cause cancer, do permanent damage to your skin and can ultimately kill you. Therefore, tanning beds are like cigarettes: dangerous and expensive. In the past year, I have cracked down on my tanning bed use. I somehow justify to myself that it is ok to go only before “big events” – i.e. weddings, etc. (This morning I was honestly thinking about going after work before my date tonight – until I saw this article) I have friends that go to the tanning bed at least 4 times a week on top of being at the pool, beach, or lake on the weekends. I have family members (I won’t name names :)) that go several times a week as well. Sure I can lecture them on their amount of tanning bed use, but I would be a hypocrite to tell them they should never go.

This is where I need to change. I don’t smoke cigarettes because of the dangers and I don’t want to go to the tanning bed because of their dangers either … but why is it sooo hard to totally cut out this habit- especially when there are alternatives like bronzing creams and lotions. I have cut back, but why can’t I cut it out? I am not addicted to the tanning bed per say because it does take a lot of money, time and smelling gross for the afternoon. Why is it so important to be tan for a friend’s wedding, but then possibly take off 10 years of your life that could then be spent with a friend? Is it really worth it; NOPE.

Sometimes in my head I feel like I play that invincible rule when it comes to the tanning bed. I have so many friends that go and so many people I know that go WAY more than I do, therefore I am only one in 10000 so nothing bad from it couldn’t happen to me. I know this is wrong and starting today I am going to work towards NEVER going to the tanning bed again. If I challenge myself to no more tanning bed, can I challenge each of you to cutting this out of your life as well? Can we spend an extra 10 years together that the tanning bed could possibly take from one of us?

These Are The Days.....We Remember

Several things today made me SO appreciate where I am in life and where I could have been if things would have turned out had I taken a different route four months ago. Like Garth said, “Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.” It’s the simple truth. Sometimes what we think we want is completely not the right thing for us, but we don’t know until God shows us another path. I can say right now that if I were to have followed that path I was down several months ago I would be MISERABLE living that life. I would have continued to have the feeling like I was closed up tight in a box like I had been for almost a year, fulfilling others dreams and not chasing my own. I have met more people, genuine people, in the past several months then I have since moving to Charlotte. What was becoming of my life in most of 2008 was not making me a better person; what was conspiring was making me a closed off person not living for myself. I don’t want to be selfish but I am more motivated now by the people in my life to be me and fully fulfill my dreams than ever before. I heart my friends!

Speaking of hearting my friends – today is technically my Friday!!! I am off tomorrow morning, headed back to K-ville for Sharon and Barker’s wedding! YEA! I am more than excited for this weekend and more than excited for Sharon and Sean to become husband and wife! Follow-up wedding details to come on Monday with hopefully some pictures! Monday might be a long post!

Bon Voyage

Make It Stress Free (or at least for everyone else!)

So this isn’t a “hate” post or a post directed at anyone in particular (and I really feel bad about expressing my opinion on this) but it is what’s on my mind right after reading several other blogs this morning and now it’s just pouring out of my finger tips like word vomit on my keyboard…..

Anyways…I am not engaged; not even close… But, I have many friends that are. I am very excited for them and I know this is something that every girl looks forward to since at least her first boyfriend. (I was never the “young girl” that dreamed about her wedding day. Let’s be honest, if I would have planned my wedding when I was six, I would have a full dress with poufy sleeves (no offense Aunt Lori, but probably something like you rocked out!) No one in 2009 can say they planned their wedding when they were six – if so I want to see the pics of that one!)

Well, this isn’t directed towards ANY of my friends. It stems from several blogs I read of some girls I know and some I don’t that just got engaged. I am having a hard time seeing things through their eyes. Someone help me out! This is all probably a complete personality difference in us and nothing personal towards these girls, but I can’t seem to understand why newly engaged chic’s hit the ground running so fast right after they get engaged with planning etc. Does anyone enjoy their engagement anymore? As soon as some girls get a ring on their finger they are stressed over “wedding stuff” and the next weekend they are totally booked with shopping for bridesmaid dresses.

I have been following several of these blogs for months now and before they had a rock on their finger their blogs were interesting - Design tips, new fashions, interesting things they found to do on the weekend, funny things their pets did, family stories, recipes etc. Now, it’s all about “Ah, I am so stressed with wedding stuff. I have to pick out flowers; I have to choose between three venues; I have to pick out bridesmaid shoes. etc. etc.”

Someone hit me over the head if one day I become this way after getting engaged. I don’t understand how hard it is. Pick out some flowers, pick out a bridesmaid dress, pick out venue and roll with it. (Sure shop a while for the wedding dress because beside your husband, the ceremony, and pictures, this is the fourth most important thing :)) But other than that, why waste so much time on it? The wedding industry in America is ridiculously over populated and you are ALWAYS going to find something you like better; you might as well make up your mind on details and move on. Invitations and Save-The-Dates go in the trash when it’s all said and done; you can’t please EVERYONE with the food and you know where that goes in the end (that is, if your guests don’t drink too much and can actually remember the food!); the cake is one of the most outrageous black holes of BLING BLING at a wedding – honestly think to yourself, without looking at pictures- what did your friend’s wedding cake look like? NO CLUE! Also, let your husband pick the band, take care of the transportation details and the bar because those are the most manly things of importance and please make him feel like he is a part of this day too! Marriage = the social institution under which a woman AND a MAN establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc. It’s about “two” not "you"!

In the end, it isn’t about what color flowers the flower girl throws as she is coming down the aisle or if they throw birdseed or do sparklers when you leave the reception. Make a choice and move on. It’s about you and your husband making a commitment to each other to spend your life together. Take time on your vows and your feelings behind your wedding and the man you are about to marry. Some girls get so caught up in the “wedding” that they forget about what they are truly in the works of doing. Marriage is not something to take lightly. Marry for the right reasons and marry once. I want my vows to mean something to me and my husband. These are the things I want to be thinking about when a man puts a ring on my finger. I want, when I write on my blog, to have posts that reflect on me and my husband’s relationship and what are lives are about. Get to know more about the significance of this day and not the colors or what they are not going to be! Don’t stress your friends out with stories about how you are soooo stressed over “wedding planning.” It’s only stressful if you let it be. Plus, by providing us EVERY detail of the decisions you have made so far you take away from the suspense of the day. It’s no fun to walk into a wedding where the bride has already told you EVERY detail down to exactly what flower stamp and ribbon were at the top of the program. Please keep our imaginations going until we get there!

Sure, we are girls and around a patio table at Cantina 1511 on a Monday night we will talk about several details for the wedding because it is an exciting time! Just remember that your friends are excited for you too but you will push us away from you or your blog if all you do is bi*ch about planning a wedding. Hey chicka, any girl without a ring on her finger would love to trade places with you right now! Appreciate that you have a man that loves you dearly and who has already made a commitment to spend the rest of his life with you by giving you a ring which allows you to plan a wedding! That’s the important part- marriage, not stressfulness of a wedding!

"The Best Mirror Is An Old Friend"

Her mother was my first grade teacher. We were in the same 2nd grade class; same 4th grade class, same 5th grade class; same team in 6th grade, and all the same classes throughout high school. We were always on the soccer field together in middle school and high school. We were sisters in ADPi, roomies at University Suites, and we lived in the ADPi house at the same time.

Yesterday Leslie celebrated her 26th birthday and I can’t tell you how appreciative I am to have had her friendship over the past 20 years.

Happy Birthday Lee Lee!

Leslie is an amazing woman and no one could take away the friendship that she has proven to me was possible. She has been there for me HONESTLY through every bend in the road with exactly the right thing to say or the appropriate gesture. Leslie is realistic and honest – something you only get from a true friend.

Walking across Piney Grove Road with a pink fisher price sleeping bag for a sleepovers; painting pillow cases at one of Les’ birthday parties; spending every waking minute at Hidden Hills pool; “having people over” when Chuck and Susie were out of town; feeling like the coolest kid in town ridding around in her white civic as she was the first to get her license; daring her in the second grade to see how hard she could bang her pink cast against the hall wall at school; watching the poor girl hobble around on her messed up knee; going out the night of college freshman orientation so that Les could meet up with one of her “friends”; going upstairs at U-Suites only to find Les laying in her bed wearing a polo sweater and seven jeans watching How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and Sweet Home Alabama; eating breakfast together in elementary school at our house before going out and playing soccer and four square, and the list could go on and on…..

Even though we are getting older and live in different cities, these childhood friendships that you form are some of the most important relationships. I am excited to cross this 26th year still calling Lee Lee a friend and look forward to at least the next 26!

Happy Birthday Les02Lee!

Apples and Wine

I got the following message sent to me from one of my co-workers that I share a lot with. It was a very nice gesture which brightened the day (I like to believe that it is true!). It was accompanied with the following email:

Blain,
I am forwarding this on to you as a word of encouragement as I perceive you to be one of the good apples somewhere near the top of the tree.
Make what you will of the grape analogy….there’s a lot of truth to that too!

Apples and Wine
Women are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree. Most men don’t want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they sometimes take the apples from the ground that aren’t as good, but easy. The apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they are amazing. They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one who is brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.
Now men…men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes, and it’s up to women to stomp the shit out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.

Now I want to share this with all the good apples I know - and you know who you are!

Makes My Mouth Water

I do not like frozen vegetable dishes. Mom experienced that this past week when she stayed with me Sunday to Tuesday. Tuesday night we made salmon and a bag of frozen roasted veggies from Trader Joes. They just were not up to par for my taste buds. I have spoiled myself with fresh veggies. But, I have gotten tired of doing the usual – sautéed onions and mushrooms, grilled asparagus, green beans and corn, grilled corn on the cob, veggie kabobs etc.

So, last night Jenna and I cooked dinner for us, Lauren, Brandon and Mr. Gildea. Jenna wanted me to introduce her to a new veggie dish so I thought I would try something new myself!

If you don’t try any other recipe I post on here, you at least have to try this one! It is VERY easy, fool proof and somewhat healthy (the little bit of butter doesn’t help, but it’s better than frying it!) You will be surprised the flavor you get out of something with few ingredients. A very sophisticated side dish that makes an amazing impression at any dinner!

You could also take this recipe and run with it…next time I might add either a sprinkle of shredded Swiss cheese over the top or even bread crumbs!

ENJOY!

Onion, Zucchini, and Tomato Bake
4 zucchini, peeled and sliced into rings on the diagonal
1 large onion, sliced thin
4 medium tomatoes, sliced
1 tsp. salt
Pepper
butter
4 tsp. basil
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese (this comes in a plastic container, not a bag like other shredded cheeses. Can be found usually where you find blue cheese crumbles, feta cheese etc.)

Rub a 9 x 13 casserole dish with butter. Leave several extra pads of butter on the bottom of the dish. Line dish with a layer of zucchini, the onions, and tomato. Top with ½ tsp salt, pepper to taste, 2 tsp. basil, ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, and ¾ cup shredded Parmesan cheese. Dot with butter and repeat layering again. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Serves 5 to 6.
Dish will look full, but vegetables will cook down.

A Fashion Trend That Needs To Be Finished

A Fashion Trend That Needs To Be Finished (OR NEVER STARTED!)
There is one trend that caught on about as fast as facebook. It seems to have affected all women from ages five to eighty five. It “threw-up” all over America, but not once on me. Now I don’t want to offend anyone, this is all strictly just my personal opinion.

Obnoxiously bright colors, patterns with amebas in every shape and combination you can possibly imagine. No I am not talking about an old school Lily Pulitzer dress (which no girl under the age of 8 should really be caught dead in unless they are at the Carolina Cup with a large floppy hat on.) I can at least give it to Lily; some of her more up-to-date pieces are not so obnoxious! What I am really talking about is Vera Bradley.

As I was walking into work this morning there was a lady on the escalator several steps in front of me. She was a rather larger woman with black tight Capri pants and a bright pink stretch cotton T-shirt. Immediately when looking up at her the only thing that caught my attention was the over-sized Vera Bradley shoulder bag in a blue, black, and red pattern. I instantly thought where is her baby? This “purse” she was carrying seriously looked like a diaper bag for a little boy in every way, shape and form. Too bad this lady was in her mid 50s! Just because you are carrying a popular brand does not make it ok to wear with everything!

It is a “fad” that I have never understood what the obsession was. These bags match with NOTHING except your great-great grandmother’s quilt! The most disturbing out of all her pieces is the book bag. “Book bag” style purses were definitely finished running their course in Style Magazine back in 1995 - Especially hot pink book bags with orange and pink flowers!
I think my disgust against Vera Bradley came in college when I was working at Crabtree & Evelyn at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh during the Christmas holiday. We were the “Mecca” in Raleigh for all things Vera. Vera seemed to be on everyone shopping list and when I say everyone I meant that woman would buy the same purse for their niece as they would for her grandmother. There is a problem here! A 50 year old should not be rockin the same purse as a 12 year old! NO WAY!

I don’t really get it! What’s the obsession with a grandma quilt built into an overpriced purse or bag!

"You Nasty Twin, I Don't Care!" - Big Pun

“Ah bummer, Saved By The Bell is college years.”

That is the response I got this morning at 7:22am after I texted Blair with “Good Morning Sister!”

At least two or three mornings out of the week around 7am I get a message from sister just saying "heeey!" Sometimes the messages are from Howie Cat and majority of the time they are just off-the-wall random. Sister is coming tonight to stay with me and go out-on-the-town with some of our girlfriends and I am super excited! I absolutely love having her here. She brings a little piece of home and a little piece of me every time she comes! It is what is getting me through this fabulous Friday!

Below are the messages and the associated pictures from the picture texts I got this week from her:

THURSDAY

From Blair :
"Good Morning Sister! I have an audience while washing my car!"

TUESDAY

From Blair’s Phone (sent from Howie Cat):
“Good morning aunt Blain. Wish we were having breakfast together! Meow Meow love you!"

From Me:
“Good Morning Howie Cat, how’s the mange coming? Have you had a bath lately?”
(I asked this because Howie Cat is alergic to fleas so he started breaking out really bad. Blair tried giving Howie a bath last weekend while I was at home to help take care of the "mange" and let’s just say it didn’t go over very well! You don’t give cats baths!)
From Blair’s Phone (sent “from” Howie Cat):
“No mom has left me alone but it is all under control now! Meow. Hope you have a good day at work! Mom says to call her when you get a chance today. She says she loves you as much as I do! Meow! Meow!”

HONESTLY THIS ALL TOOK PLACE! Sister's messages bring a giggle to every morning!
Hurry Up Sister and Drive Faster! Can't wait to see your beautiful, amazing, gorgeous, glowing face! ha ha

I Run To You

Lady Antebellum- “I Run To You”:
I run my life
Or is it running me?
Run from the past
I run too fast
Or too slow it seems
We run on fumes
Your life and mine
Like the sands of time
Slippin’ right on through
When it all starts coming undone
Baby, you’re the only one I run to
I run to you.
On Tuesday night, Preston and I went for our, what seems to have become weekly, walk with Bear along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway through the 98 acres of Charlottes “Central Park”, Freedom Park. It was amazing outside so the park was crowded with pick-up volleyball, soccer and softball games; people fishing, rollerblading, running and walking their dogs.

Anyway, I totally despise it when you are strolling along a sidewalk made for two people to walk side-by-side and as the two of you are approach another couple they do not move over. The stay their course and force both of you to step off the side into the grass. Hello- rude! The proper thing to do is one person of each couple file behind your partner until a “pass” is complete. Common courtesy. Share the “road.”

Well as we were walking on Tuesday, almost every person we passed expressed a simple smile or a friendly hello and EVERYONE shared the sidewalk appropriately. Bikers did not fly by thinking they owned the place; they gave the appropriate signals and respected the walkers. It was such a refreshing feeling to be surrounded with pleasant people. Preston and I both noticed how nice our walk was because tonight everyone seemed to be on “happy” pills! We started discussing how we really think it’s just more of a southern thing. I started telling Preston how one of my friends mom was amazed when she came down to Charlotte from the north and the lady checking her out at the grocery store asked her if she found everything ok and then started a small conversation as she rang up her groceries. She said that she couldn’t remember the last time someone working behind any counter was that friendly and approachable. It makes me a little proud to be born and raised in the south!

Yesterday I had my weekly lunch date with Jenna and in our gossip catch up conversation I came to the conclusion that I LOVE to grocery shop! I LOVE to know that I am getting to select everything I want to put in my mouth that week; I LOVE the challenge of finding the lowest price and best deal; I LOVE the feeling of being able to complete my entire trip by doing 90% of my shopping around the outer parts of the store. I NEVER do my weekly grocery shopping in a time constraint. I plan to do nothing else that afternoon so I can take as much time as I need; it helps take the edge off! It’s my stress free event until I get to the register. I hate to pay (who does?!) So I came to the conclusion that when I need a part time job, I will go grocery shopping for elders that cannot get to the store on their own!

So I left work yesterday and hit up the store for my weekly grocery “spa”. As I was approaching the deli section to take full advantage of the VIC special on turkey breast, I noticed a lady in her mid 50’s with ATLEAST 5 grocery lists. She had ordered 3 separate 1lb bags of the same turkey I wanted, so as the man behind the counter said, “I’ll be with you in one minute mam’” I simply replied, “Well you can keep that turkey out because I’m going to get the same thing!” The lady then turned to me with a smile and said “nice choice!” We then started into small conversation about how often we came to the store and where we lived in relation to Cotswald. She proceeded to tell me that she had just retired and now on the side she shops for individuals that can’t get to the store on their own. A little strange I had just said I wanted to do this?! – I think so!! I told her that was crazy because just that afternoon I was talking about how I wanted to do that as a second job! She gave me her card and told me to call her anytime if I had some free time. If she was loaded with lists, I could help her out! Not only was she friendly, a southern bell raised in Myers Park Charlotte (like Preston and I had talked about the night before), but she had a side job I would love to do (like Jenna and I had discussed)! Coincidence – I don’t think so!

As I continued my journey to find Italian bread crumbs, (which, if I were designing the grocery store they would be on the same isle as the stuffing - not on the top shelf near the cake baking stuff!) I was wondering aimlessly down one of the wine isles, only focused on getting to the other end. Almost there, a woman in her early 70’s gently grabbed my arm and said “I was an Alpha Delta Pi!” She had noticed my T-shirt! Now I know I am true sorority girl because I got overly excited! It’s fun to see someone this much older share this same tradition as the one’s we know in ADPi. We held small talk and I found out she went to UGA and moved to Charlotte when she graduated. She was the sweetest and cutest little lady AND she was on the wine isle; a classy ADPi!

As I was driving back to my apartment with the window’s down and the plastic grocery bags flapping in the wind, I just started smiling! I didn’t really care what happened that day at work or how stressed I was. These little things like friendly southern people, grocery shopping for the elders, and the idea that there are tons of women out there of all ages who share the same traditions like in ADPi, just lit a little fire in me. I love people who talk to people; it makes the day brighter!
As I was telling Anna and Preston of my wonderful “coincidental” afternoon, Preston said, “Oh B, you’re so simple and such a soft shell. It’s the little things that make your little world go-round.” And it’s true; you have to see the best of everything!

I love the song above because it reminds me every day to take a step back and slow down and cherish the relationships we make in life, even if it is with a stranger in the grocery store who was an ADPi alum or Judy, the retiree who shops for others! For me, the “I run to you” isn’t about a single person! Allow others to work into you and on you to take these daily stresses away! “Run” to everyone to make your day a little better!

Time Goes By To Fast

On the way back yesterday from the much needed vacation in Wilmington with friends, as tired as I was my mind was running in circles. I was going between all I had to do when I got home – laundry, grocery, and dinner with P – to work, school and relationships. As my mind was drifting along the empty road ahead of us, I realized that this time two years ago was the happiest and scariest time of my life. Nothing could have prepared me for the roller coaster of feelings I was on during the first week in July of 2006. It was a ride that Bush Gardens couldn’t even beat.

I had just left Matt and all my friends in Raleigh. I had an apartment already set up in Charlotte with two girls who were almost strangers, soon to become more than just dear friends. I had “lived up” the month of June in Hawaii and by the pool in Raleigh, choosing for the first time since my freshman year not to work a single day. I was to start a new job in downtown Charlotte on July 9th and had no idea about the new city I was moving too or the people in it. As I was driving towards Kernersville from Raleigh with a suitcase in the trunk, one minute I was crying, the next I was singing out load and smiling. (If someone would have been in the car next to me for the entire trip down I-40 they would have thought I was on crack.)

Two weeks prior to this car ride, I was outside on a gorgeous day watching the boys play volleyball at University House. My phone rang and it was a call from home. It was mom. I answered it and walked out to the parking lot so I could hear. If you know conversations between my mom and me, they always start out with something goofy:
Me: “Hey momma”

Mom: “Hey Beana. I love you more than all the hairs lily cat left on my kitchen floor today.
What are you doing?”

Me: “I love you more than all the rays of sunshine I am getting now out beside the pool!”

(All spoken in a voice only mom, Blair, and I will ever understand - Drives dad crazy!)

But that day the conversation was totally different and I knew it from the start because mom said “Hey Blain.” She never calls me Blain unless something is wrong. She then proceeds to tell me that the doctors have found a tumor in her spinal cord and next week they were going to have to go in, remove it and biopsy it to see if it is cancerous. Immediately my happy little world – just graduated and had been to Hawaii, hanging out with friends and about to move to a new city with new adventures – it all seemed to crumble in my hands as I sat down on the concrete stairs outside the apartment. From there mom went on to explain some details but I didn’t hear anything else. Like she always does, she tried to play it off like it was no bid deal; it was just something that had to be done. I am not a surgeon but I am pretty positive that opening up someone’s spinal cord to remove a tumor is not a routine procedure.

When I hung up, I went back out to the pool and Matt immediately came over knowing something was wrong. He took me into the apartment I was living in with Downer, Dave and Ryan and I fell apart in his arms. Matt had no clue what to say to me to make it better but it didn’t matter, there were no words that would take back the last 15 minutes. Quickly a storm moved in over Raleigh so for the rest of the afternoon Matt and I sat on the coffee table and played guitar hero to take my mind off of what mom was about to go through. “Carry On My Wayward Son” will forever mark this day as it was played over and over again.

Within the next week, for the first time in my life, I realized the true power or prayer. After nights of silently crying myself to sleep and thinking that if something were to happen to mom – anything – I wasn’t going to move to Charlotte; I was moving home and even then, honestly, how could I function if something were to happen to my best friend.

There is one gene that I picked up from mom – the worry gene. I spent every day thinking the worst but tried so hard to hold it together so that mom would not see me upset. I played it off pretty well until the night before mom’s surgery. We had some friends and family meet us at the church for prayer with our pastor. Seeing the concern in dad’s eyes and in his actions I feel apart one final time in his arms, in front of mom and all our family and friends.

I spent the next day in my own little coma. Blair was at the beach with Sam’s family and after consistent insistence, mom made her stay and not come home “just for the surgery,” as mom would put it. (Maybe I get the hard- headed gene from mom too - even though if you know my father, I don’t have a hope in the world in the hard-headed department!) As much as mom didn’t want to make Blair come all the way home, I think I needed her there more than anyone.

The day of mom’s surgery flew by. Watching dad wear a path in the floor from the waiting room to the hospital lobby; visiting the baby floor nursery multiple times with Sarah, and just sitting beside Joan (my second mother) and Kathy (who held my hand the entire time),for the first time I knew it was going to be ok. My mom was being watched over.

After what seemed like 30 hours of surgery, even though I think it was more like 6 or 7, mom’s surgeon came out and told dad as soon as they opened up her spinal cord and it relieved pressure on her nerves holding the tumor in, they were able to remove the entire thing. I then remember specifically walking to a chair in the corner and just sitting down by myself. No one bothered me and allowed me to have my own little moment with God, the one that really saved mom.

After several minutes, Shelbie walked over, sat down beside me and placed her hand on top of mine which were clasped in my lap, and still not a word was spoken. When you have a family which is as tight and close as mine, talking is not needed for communication – we are there for each other.

That week following mom’s surgery was an experience I will never take for granted; I felt privileged. I was able to stay at home with mom 24 hours a day and take care of her every need. I honestly felt that she was too precious of a gift to let anyone else help, touch or do anything for her. She was MY mom and I wanted to do it – no one else. I had to fight back the all-too-often gut feeling of passing out as I bandaged and re-bandaged the permanent five inch “dent” at the bottom of her neck. I straightened pillows, cooked dinner for dad and I, flipped TV channels and was even a “make-shift crutch” in the bathroom on and off the toilet (mom don’t hurt me for saying that! I love you more than all the pieces of Charmin in the world !) I felt privileged to take care of her and she deserved the absolute best treatment.

That week, I learned firsthand the importance of family, friends and even more prayer. My mom had more people then she could have ever imagined praying for her, even people that had no idea who she was except for the fact that she was my mother. From the morning of walking with her into the Preop room, helping her change into a gown and turquoise footy socks while she sat there and shivered, something silent brought mom and I together that did and will forever change our relationship.

She is MY mom and no one else will ever take her place. She is my best friend; the kind I won’t find in any other friends. I am not sure if she even knew it, but that week something even grew in myself and mom and I appreciate her more than ever for being the spirit and person that she is. I am so thankful that God gave me all of my mother back that week and I am forever grateful.

All of these emotions were rushing through me on our drive back yesterday remembering what I was doing exactly two years ago. It is crazy to experience the twists and turns that life takes, and it stinks to think that maybe it took something this big in my life for me to become a better person and appreciate my family and the little things in life a little more - but . . . God has a purpose for everything.

I love my mother for all that she is and I continue to pray every night for the health of my family and friends. No one deserves to go through what mom did, but she proved to everyone how strong of a person she is. If I am ever presented with the same type of situation, I only hope to handle it with the grace that she proved to me was possible.

It’s crazy how fast two years can go by.

G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S

Resnick, I am ready !

I am beaming from ear to ear right now. I don’t care that I stayed up too late last night and only got 4 ½ hours of sleep. I don’t care that I am starving right now because my English muffin that was consumed at 4am is long gone. I don’t care that I didn’t wash my hair and it’s pulled back like a 5th grader. I don’t care that these heals hurt my feet, that I am drinking a cold cup of tea, and I’m rocking the “natural glow” instead of makeup. I don’t care because in “T minus five hours” I am out of Charlotte and headed to Wilmington for the 4th of July! I am on my way with Laura to stay at LJ’s for a weekend of some fun in the sun with friends! (Megan, don’t forget to pick up your thong bikini from the dry cleaners!) Thanks to facebook, I am also excited to hopefully see Lee Lee, KT Weeg, Landon, Steve-O, Lauren Baker and Amy S. as they too will be vacationing it by the beach for my favorite holiday!

With my slight A.D.D. that I have going on right now, I ran across two things that I just had to share:

1. New Tourist Attraction:
“The Ledge” has been added to the 103rd floor of the Sears Tower in Chicago. The new tourist attraction is made up of four glass-bottomed balconies each comprised of three layers of half-inch-thick glass. They are designed to hold about five tons! The inspiration for The Ledge came from hundreds of forehead prints visitors left behind on Skydeck windows every week. These balconies are suspended 1,353 feet in the air and jut out four feet from the building. The new attraction gives visitors the feeling they are floating over the city! Could you walk out on it?!
The balconies are just one of the big changes coming to the Sears Tower. The building’s name will change to Willis Tower later this summer.
click on these pics to see them better!

2. The Sweetest Letter:

Now this is what marriage should be about. I pulled this entry from another blog that I like to follow. It will simply melt your heart. (Thanks Sharon for sharing!)

The letter I will never forget
well, by this time, as you read this letter, we have already talked. "the talk" has already taken place. the same talk that i've thought and dreamed about for years. the talk that has haunted me, but at the same time shined bright in my heart for as long as i can remember. the talk that i sit and tremble for...lay and pray for...and smile and breath for. it's one of the biggest moments i'll ever have. it's incredible, beautiful, yet petrifying. the talk, i knew, would be a memory, always, in my heart...and it's already taken place. but now i sit, i stare, with a tremble - ever so slight. important, the only way, however it may be. smile, cry, or laugh? jump, sit, or walk? talk, pray or dream? what do i do?...except wait. peggy, what has happened has been one of the most important things in my life. i have dreamed about this day forever. since i can remember, i've wondered about this day. should i call you or surprise you? no answer would come to me. all i know is that i have loved your daughter since the very day i met her. i mean that literally and my life has changed because of her. there has never been a question if she was the one, only when? i cannot live without your beautiful, stunning, intelligent, all-heart daughter. she is the greatest person i've ever known. when the day comes, i will never leave her side. she is as much a part of me as my own heart. together, through life, we will walk. i pray for your blessing as i finish this letter. into this consideration is also a mother whom i love with all my heart. without you, this is not complete. without you, it will not be. allow me to lead your daughter, with jesus christ as our guide, through the remainder of our lives and forever. with love, ryan
last week, my mom was at my house and pulled this folded up letter out of her purse. she asked me if i remembered what it was and i told her i had never seen it before. her mouth dropped open and she said she couldn't believe she had never shown it to me. i was, after all, only 19 years old when it was written. she told me to sit down and read it aloud and as i did my eyes filled up with tears and i struggled to get the words out. this letter was given to my mom by ryan when he asked her for my hand in marriage. when i think about how young we were, i am amazed at how mature his words were. yet, at the same time, it assures me all these years later that he is my soulmate and that he was handpicked by god for me to love & live my life with. being a wedding photographer is a constant reminder to me of just how sacred marriage is. it's not about the flowers, the cake, the food or how elaborate the reception details are. a wedding is your chance to shout to the world that you have found the one your heart belongs with, the one who you can sing off-tune with, the one who can hold you close when everything else is falling down around you. marriage is more than vows, more than rings, more than i do's. marriage is about asking god for the strength to be committed in a way that isn't popular. it's about putting in effort & not expecting things to be easy. it's about cheering each other on, making each other laugh & crying together. in the midst of my own fairy tale, this letter is a reminder to me about what true love is. and happily ever after has more meaning to me because i have been given eight years with the man i truly adore.

Is that not the sweetest thing you have ever read!

Some People Just Keep Me Laughing

Found this today at work:
Ok honestly dude? Did you really just try that!
Ha ha..just click and watch! Funny Stuff...

Red, White, and Blue !

Three days away from my favorite holiday! You better bet I will bust out my red, white and blue clothes tomorrow as I head east to celebrate this wonderful weekend with some great friends and my toes in the sand!

The 4th of July is not about present giving, Easter baskets, tons of heavy food followed by football. We don’t run around trying to visit every family member, shopping, and making sure we spend exactly $30 on each relative instead of buying what we really think they would like. We don’t waste time cooking endless hours and worrying how we are all going to fit in one house. No one is stressed and frantic. The 4th of July is the only holiday that hasn’t succumbed to these outrageous routines we force ourselves through. (You should be trying to see your family throughout the entire year…not just at the holidays!)

As kids, the 4th of July in the Higgins household meant watching the parade from the corner of West Mountain and Nelson Street with all of our church and family friends. It meant going to the pool as a family, cooking out with friends and right before it gets dark, heading to Kernersville Raiders field behind Kernersville Elementary to watch the fireworks with the rest of Kvegas. My biggest attraction to this holiday is because out of all the holidays, I remember having a stronger feeling of “family” on the 4th of July. When telling mom this last weekend, she said “I don’t know why, we never did anything special for the 4.th” Well that’s my point exactly. We didn’t do anything special. We did our regular activities during the day, but for once we did everything together. All four of us went to the parade; all four of us went to the pool; all four of us ate dinner together; all four of us watched the fireworks together; and all four of us came home together. This was rare in our family with all of us being so busy. It was the best feeling in the world to know all four of us were together for the entire day.

In honor of my favorite holiday, here is a little 4th of July Trivia!
1. Independence Day commemorate the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. However, it was not declared a legal holiday until 1941.

2. Fireworks were made in China as early as the 11th century. The Chinese used their pyrotechnic mixtures for war rockets and explosives.

3. Uncle Sam was first popularized during the war of 1812, when the term appeared on supply containers. Believe it or not, the U.S. Congress didn’t adopt him as a national symbol until 1961.

4. The first two versions of the Liberty Bell were defective and had to be melted down and recast. The third version rang every Fourth of July from 1778 to 1835, when according to tradition, it cracked as it was being tolled for the death of Chief Justice John Marshall.

5. The American national anthem, the “Star-Spangled Banner,” is set to the tune of an English drinking song (“To Anacreon in Heaven”).

6. Father of the country and architect of independence George Washington held his first public office at the tender age of 17. He continued in public service until his death in 1799. (ARE YOU SERIOUS – 17!)

7. There is no official designation or meaning for the colors of the flag. There is no record stating why red, white, and blue were chosen for the flag. However when the Great Seal of the United States was chosen this is what was listed for them:
White for Purity and innocence
Red for valor and hardiness
Blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice

8. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams & Thomas Jefferson served on the committee that picked the eagle for the national seal (Franklin wanted the turkey!)

9. A French engineer, Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, who built the Eiffel Tower in Paris also devised the iron framework of the Statue of Liberty
